Fort Greene / Downtown Brooklyn
Historically, downtown Brooklyn had been a commercial and civic center. However, in the past decade the area has become more residential, attracting people with its rich cultural institutions, parks and lively atmosphere.
Exploring the Neighborhood
Fort Greene Park, once the site of the Battle of Long Island during the Revolutionary War, is now at the center of one of the most interesting neighborhoods in Brooklyn. Fort Greene/Downtown Brooklyn offers quick access to Manhattan, plenty of local restaurants and stores and is also home to seven colleges & universities, which are attended by over 30,000 students. Downtown Brooklyn has become a world renown destination for shopping, entertainment and cultural events, while the streets around Fort Greene continue to retain their charming old world feel.
Landmarks include Brooklyn Borough Hall, Kings County New York State Courthouse and numerous schools including Brooklyn Friends School, St. Joseph’s College and Long Island University. Attractions include Fulton Mall, the New York Transit Museum, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Barclays Center and Fort Greene Park.
Fort Greene Park was originally the site of forts used during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. In 1847 it was turned into a public park and in 1867 was re-designed by famed park landscape architects Olmsted and Vaux.
BAM, or The Brooklyn Academy of Music, is a landmark institution for concerts, plays, film screenings, ballet performances and other cultural offerings.
Barclays Center is home to the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Islanders and attracts people from around the city and beyond with its sports events and concerts.
